“Am I Cinderella?” Z grinned at me as she looked at the back of my camera in the middle of the row of lavender plants growing around us.
Maybe it is because I spend too much time on Instagram, but I have always had this dream of shooting in one of those sprawling fields of flowers with a model twirling in a beautiful dress. With the impact of COVID-19, I thought this dream would have to wait for another calendar year. Happy Farm in Manalapan, NJ certainly had the lavender fields that I was dreaming about, but coordinating my schedule along with Z’s (one of my favorite clients and also the Chic Chemist) and trying to find overlap with good weather and the lavender season (June) seemed impossible. So we decided to hold off and take advantage of their sunflower season (June through August).
However, Mother Nature decided to smile on our plans this year and, miraculously, Happy Farm announced that they were going to have one extra week of lavender viewings, to coincide with the beginning of sunflower season. Which meant that instead of one shoot (and one location), Z and I were prepping for two locations (albeit on the same farm) and two outfits in the sweltering July heat. We couldn’t have been more excited. Together we styled a chic European-esque look for the lavender and a more casual fun look for the sunflower. (With a few surprise close-ups on her engagement ring for good measure!)
