“I don’t think he’s going to propose, but, there’s, like, a really slim chance. I just wanted you to know.” Z’s text came a few hours before the couples session we had planned for her and her then boyfriend, who is now her fiancĂ©. Whenever people ask me about the most nerve-wracking shoot I’ve ever done, this is always my answer. It was not only my first time meeting Michael, but I spent the shoot wondering if he was going to suddenly decide to surprise both Z and I by dropping to one knee.
Much to everyone’s relief, the proposal came a few weeks later. While I would’ve been honored to shoot their proposal, let this be a reminder to all potentially proposing spouses – always let the photographer in on the plan. We’re not the ones you’re supposed to be surprising.
Now that they’re officially engaged, and COVID19 seems to finally be on the decline, my favorite couple has started to plan their wedding. As if we didn’t have enough fun at their original shoot, they asked me to shoot engagement photos for all things wedding!
Z and Michael – thank you for another day full of antics, giggles, and the familiar rhythm of love expressed through teasing and sarcasm. Thank you for trusting me to capture your relationship from the goofy to the serious to the intimate moments that are usually reserved for just each other. You are the only couple that I will break my ‘no dogs’ rule for.
(And, Michael – a special thank you for humoring us as we planned and executed an almost three hour photo extravaganza that involved three location switches, an outfit change, and necessitated a beer break towards the end. We just can’t help ourselves…)
